Types of Magnesium Supplements: Forms Explained
Magnesium supplements come in multiple chemical forms. Differences in solubility and absorption matter, but they do not make every marketing claim about a specific form true.
Common forms
Citrate: NIH identifies citrate among forms that tend to be absorbed more completely than magnesium oxide.
Glycinate/bisglycinate: widely sold as a supplement form; assess the actual label and evidence for any claimed use.
Oxide: common, but NIH notes lower bioavailability than several more soluble forms.
Other forms: malate, threonate, chloride and multi-form blends appear in the market. Treat product-specific benefit claims separately from basic chemistry.
